Brand and Design

Hampton Design · Tampa, Florida

A brand is not a logo file. It is the set of decisions that makes the next hundred pieces of collateral look like they came from the same company, and the files that make that easy.

I design it and then I build with it, which tends to stop a brand that only works in the presentation.

What you get

  • Logo, wordmark and monogram, delivered as vector files you can actually use.
  • Type, colour and layout system, written down, so the next designer does not have to guess.
  • Original illustration and character work when a brand needs something nobody else can own.
  • Print: business cards, signage, labels, one pagers, trade show material.
  • Social and ad creative built from the system instead of invented each week.

Who it is for

  • Businesses whose logo was made in a hurry and is now on a truck.
  • New ventures that need to look established before they are.
  • Companies with a decent logo and nothing else, so every piece of collateral looks different.
  • Brands moving into retail or wholesale where packaging and print suddenly matter.

Work I can point at

Super Spicy Bucs Memes

Sports media, Tampa

A full identity built around an original mascot illustration, with no team marks anywhere in it. Then the content site, a weekly in season newsletter, and a posting interface the owner runs himself. The mascot is his, which is the only reason the brand is safe to grow.

Rummer Development

Architecture, Portland OR

Brand, logo and guidelines for a company reviving Bob Rummer's mid century modern homes, then the cinematic website built on that system.

Mayo Cognac

Luxury spirits

Art direction and the full visual system for a family cognac house launch, carried through the site, the bottle photography sequence and the sales material.

Team MegaWatts

Solar recruiting

Recruiting brand and ad creative for a door to door solar sales organisation, built as a poster system so new ads come out of the system rather than out of nowhere.

How the engagement runs

01

Brief

Who you are, who you are selling to, and what the brand has to survive. Trucks, embroidery, a two colour print run, a phone screen.

02

Direction

You get a small number of real directions, not forty logo options. We pick one before anything gets refined.

03

System

The chosen direction becomes type, colour, layout rules and the files. Every format you will need, named so you can find it.

04

Apply

The first real pieces get built from the system: the site, the cards, the ads. That is where you find out if a brand works.

Questions people ask

What do I get at the end of a brand project?

Vector logo files in every format you will need, a written type and colour system, and the first set of applied pieces. Not a single PNG and a mood board.

Can you do original illustration?

Yes. For Super Spicy Bucs Memes the whole identity hangs off an original mascot, which also keeps the brand clear of team trademarks. Owning the character is what makes it safe to put on merchandise.

Do you work from an existing logo?

Often. If the logo is fine and the problem is that nothing around it matches, you need the system, not a redesign.

Will you design the website too?

Yes, and I build it. A brand that only works in a presentation is a brand that has never been tested.

Do you do packaging and print?

Yes: labels, cards, signage, trade show material and sales sheets, set up properly for the printer.
